मूल स्थान: विश्व के लगभग सभी उष्णकटिबंधीय और उपोष्णकटिबंधीय क्षेत्र।

इस उपपरिवार की सभी पौधे रसीले (सक्युलेंट) नहीं होते हैं। इसकी विशेषता है जटिल फूल जिनमें मुकुट (क्राउन) होते हैं और परागकणों (पोलिनिया) के माध्यम से एक विशेष परागण प्रणाली, जो ऑर्किड के समान होती है। यह मोर्फोलॉजिकल विविधता प्रदर्शित करता है और कई वंशों में, मुख्य रूप से तनों या जड़ों में पानी जमा करके शुष्क जलवायु के लिए स्पष्ट अनुकूलन दिखाता है। कई प्रजातियाँ पौधे के टुकड़ों से आसानी से प्रजनन करने की क्षमता दिखाती हैं, विशेष रूप से वे जिनमें रसीला विकास होता है।
