Etymology:
In honor of R. Schoonees, South African botanist and collector.
Place of Origin:
South Africa, Karoo region mainly.
Succulent plant, shrubby or small tree-like, perennial, with fleshy stems and opposite, compact, fleshy leaves. Its flowers are small, hermaphroditic, with five free petals and sepals, arranged in racemose or cymose inflorescences. The fruit is a capsule containing tiny seeds. It is highly adapted to arid and semi-arid environments. It is highly valued as an ornamental plant for its drought tolerance and ease of cultivation in xerophytic gardens.
