Mammillaria matudae
Bravo 1956

Etymology: In honor of Dr. Eizi Matuda (1894-1978), a Japanese botanist who settled in Mexico. He achieved great prominence in this country.
Place of Origin: State of Mexico

Its small size, harmless appearance, and easy cultivation make it an ideal candidate for our gardens. Its creeping nature often leads to misunderstandings, resulting in such grotesque situations as adding a stake to keep them upright.

Cylindrical creeping plant, approximately 3-4 cm in diameter. Light pink funnel-shaped flowers up to 15mm. Elongated green or purplish fruits up to 17mm with a pleasant sour strawberry flavor. Shortly after ripening, they dry out. Areoles consist of one brown spine that lightens over time, attached to the stem pointing toward the apex, and about 20 nearly translucent white radial spines. No wooliness in the axils. Contains latex. Light brown seeds with a distinct shell-like textured pattern. Cultivation: A low-maintenance plant that prefers filtered sun or partial shade. Tolerates humidity and moderate cold well (0°C). Despite being a creeping plant, it elevates its stems during the flowering season.
