Etymology: Also known as Compositae. It means aster family type genus of this family and that in Greek means star, referring to the shape of their flowers.
Origin: Spread on every continent and in almost all regions.

It is one of the largest families, more than 20,000 species. It is characterized by numerous inflorescences composed of flowers surrounded by bracts. Herbaceous or shrubby usually present habit. Some essential oils contain interesting commercially important.
